In current Odoo versions, a subscription is a sales order with a recurring plan. That keeps recurring revenue in the same flow as one-off sales: same products, same pricelists, same invoices and the same customer portal.

Accounting for subscriptions
Annual plans paid upfront usually need deferred revenue. Odoo can spread revenue over the service period, but the accounting setup needs agreeing with your accountant before the first invoice runs.
