Odoo POS for Retail: Setup, Hardware and Lessons

Running retail on Odoo Point of Sale: shop setup, hardware choices, offline mode, multi-store stock, loyalty, cash control and connecting stores to online sales.

By ERP Builders Team2 min read

Odoo Point of Sale runs in a browser, works on tablets and PCs, and shares stock, products and customers with the rest of Odoo. For retailers with a few stores and an online shop, that shared database is the main attraction. No nightly sync between till and back office.

Shop setup

For each store, create a POS configuration with:

  • The warehouse or stock location it sells from
  • Payment methods (cash, card terminal, vouchers)
  • Price list and taxes
  • Receipt layout
  • Whether staff log in individually (recommended for accountability)

Hardware

Keep it simple and test before buying for every store:

  • Device: tablet or PC with Chrome or a supported browser
  • Receipt printer: network (Ethernet/Wi-Fi) printers supported by your version, or via an IoT box
  • Cash drawer: usually connected through the printer
  • Barcode scanner: USB or Bluetooth in keyboard mode
  • Card terminal: choose one with a supported integration in your country
  • Scale: for weighed goods, check compatibility

Buy one full set first, run it in one store for two weeks, then roll out.

Offline mode

The POS loads products and prices into the browser and can keep selling if the internet drops briefly. Orders sync when it's back. Plan for longer outages: keep a fallback card terminal mode and a clear procedure staff know.

Multi-store stock

Each store is a stock location. You get:

  • Live stock across stores and the warehouse
  • Inter-store transfers
  • Replenishment from the warehouse using reordering rules per store

Staff can see stock at other stores and tell a customer where to find an item.

Loyalty, gift cards and promotions

Odoo has loyalty programmes, gift cards, coupons and promotions shared between POS and eCommerce. Keep the promotions list tidy. Overlapping promotions confuse staff and customers.

Cash control

Use opening and closing cash counts for each session. Investigate differences daily, not monthly. Odoo posts session totals to accounting when the session closes.

Connecting to online sales

If you also sell online, you can:

  • Show store stock online ("available in store")
  • Allow click and collect
  • Accept returns in-store for online orders

These need clear process design. The software handles it, but staff need to know the rules.

Lessons from retail rollouts

  1. Clean product data and barcodes first. Missing barcodes slow down checkout immediately.
  2. Train on the actual hardware. Not a laptop in the back office.
  3. Go live on a quiet day. Never on a Saturday or before a holiday.
  4. Support on site for the first day.

For restaurants, Odoo POS has a separate restaurant mode with floor plans and kitchen printing. That's a different setup again.

See our point of sale solution page, or the inventory management guide for the stock side.

Frequently asked questions

Does Odoo POS work offline?

Yes. The POS can keep selling during short internet outages and syncs orders when the connection returns. Some features, like checking live stock in other stores, need a connection.

What hardware does Odoo POS need?

A tablet or computer with a modern browser, plus optional receipt printer, cash drawer, barcode scanner, scale and card terminal. Some hardware connects through an IoT box or supported network printers.
