Odoo eCommerce vs Shopify + Odoo: Which Setup Fits?

Should you run your online store on Odoo eCommerce or keep Shopify or WooCommerce and integrate with Odoo? A practical comparison of features, SEO, costs and operations.

By ERP Builders Team2 min read

If you run Odoo, you have two broad options for selling online: use Odoo's own website and eCommerce app, or keep a dedicated platform like Shopify or WooCommerce and integrate it with Odoo. Both work. They suit different businesses.

Option 1: Odoo eCommerce

The store runs inside Odoo, on the same database as sales, stock and accounting.

Strengths

  • No integration to build or maintain
  • Real stock levels, customer-specific pricing and B2B price lists out of the box
  • Customer portal with orders, invoices and reorders
  • One login, one system to manage

Weaknesses

  • Fewer themes and front-end apps than Shopify
  • Less specialised marketing tooling
  • Performance and design need care for high-traffic consumer stores

Best for: B2B portals, wholesale ordering, small to mid-size B2C stores, and businesses that want one system.

Option 2: Shopify or WooCommerce plus Odoo

The store runs on the platform. Orders, customers and stock sync with Odoo through a connector.

Strengths

  • Best-in-class storefront, themes, checkout and apps
  • Marketing tools and integrations built for consumer eCommerce
  • Easier for marketing teams to manage without touching the ERP

Weaknesses

  • Integration to build, monitor and maintain
  • Two sources of product data to keep aligned
  • Edge cases: partial refunds, exchanges, bundles, gift cards, multi-location stock

Best for: consumer brands with high traffic, heavy marketing and teams used to Shopify.

What the integration must handle

If you go with option 2, check that the connector covers:

  • Orders into Odoo, with taxes, discounts and shipping lines matching
  • Stock from Odoo to the store, near real time, per location if needed
  • Products and prices: decide which system is the master
  • Fulfilment: tracking numbers back to the store
  • Refunds and returns, which are always the hardest part
  • Payouts: reconciling platform payouts against orders in accounting
  • Failure handling: what happens when a sync fails at 2am?

Marketplaces

Amazon, eBay and others add another layer. Odoo has connectors for some marketplaces. Others go through multichannel tools. The key is the same: one place where stock is the truth, everything else reads from it. See Amazon integration.

How we'd decide

Ask three questions:

  1. Is the store mostly B2B or B2C? B2B leans Odoo. High-volume B2C leans Shopify.
  2. Who runs the store day to day? If it's a marketing team used to Shopify, keep Shopify.
  3. How many edge cases do you have? Bundles, subscriptions, multi-warehouse, gift cards. Each one makes integration harder and native Odoo more attractive.

Our Odoo eCommerce service builds either option.

Frequently asked questions

Is Odoo eCommerce good for SEO?

It covers the basics: editable URLs, meta tags, sitemaps and structured content. Dedicated platforms like Shopify have more themes and SEO apps. For most B2B stores, Odoo is fine.

Can Odoo sync stock with Shopify in real time?

With a good connector, stock updates can be near real time. Check how the connector handles stock reservations, multi-location stock and failures.
