Odoo Manufacturing, configured for your shop floor

Odoo's Manufacturing app covers bills of materials, routings and work centres, manufacturing and work orders, replenishment planning, subcontracting, by-products, and — with the related apps — quality control, maintenance and product lifecycle management.

Overview

The short version

Getting value from it depends on modelling your production correctly: how deep the BOMs go, whether you need work orders or just manufacturing orders, how components are consumed, and how costs roll up. Those modelling decisions are where we spend most of the early design time.

ERP Builders is an independent Odoo services company and is not affiliated with or endorsed by Odoo S.A. “Odoo” is a trademark of Odoo S.A.

01

Modelling decisions

These decisions determine whether planning, costing and the shop-floor interface make sense to the people using them.

BOM structure

Multi-level BOMs with phantom (kit) sub-assemblies where it simplifies planning, and variant-specific lines to avoid duplicating BOMs.

Routings and work centres

Operations with setup and run times, capacity, and costs per hour. Detailed enough for scheduling, not so detailed that nobody maintains them.

Consumption and backflushing

Whether components are consumed at operation start, completion or manually — and how flexible quantities should be.

Replenishment

Make-to-order versus make-to-stock routes, reordering rules, lead times and the MRP scheduler that turns demand into proposals.

Costing

Standard versus actual costs, labour and overhead absorption, and scrap. Wrong costing configuration is the most common cause of distrusted margins.

Traceability

Lot and serial numbers on components and finished goods, with upstream and downstream traceability reports.

02

Where Odoo Manufacturing needs extension

Discrete manufacturing and assembly fit Odoo well. Process industries with potency-based formulation, complex co-product costing, regulated electronic batch records or advanced finite-capacity scheduling usually need extension or a specialised add-on. We are explicit about this during fit assessment rather than discovering it at go-live.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Does Odoo support finite capacity scheduling?

Odoo plans work orders against work centre capacity and working hours, which covers many job shops. Plants that need advanced optimisation across constraints often pair Odoo with a dedicated scheduling tool.

Can Odoo handle subcontracting?

Yes. Odoo supports subcontracting flows where components are sent to a subcontractor and finished goods received back, with costs captured on the subcontracted BOM.

Can operators use tablets on the shop floor?

Yes. Odoo provides a shop-floor interface for operators to start and finish work orders, record quantities and complete quality checks, which works well on tablets mounted at work centres.
