Odoo for Food and Beverage Companies
How Odoo fits food and beverage businesses: lot tracking and expiry dates, recalls, recipes and BOMs, quality checks, FEFO picking, shelf life and allergen data.
Food and beverage businesses have strict needs: traceability, expiry control, quality and food safety. Odoo covers them well when configured with care.
Lot tracking and expiry dates
Track ingredients and finished goods by lot. Enable expiration dates so each lot carries a best-before or use-by date. Odoo can then:
- Pick the lots that expire first (FEFO)
- Alert on lots close to expiry
- Block expired lots from being picked
Traceability and recalls
When a supplier reports a problem, the traceability report shows every production order and customer delivery that used the affected lot. Run a mock recall during testing. It is often an audit requirement.
Recipes and BOMs
In Odoo Manufacturing, recipes are bills of materials. Use:
- Units of measure suited to recipes, such as kg, litres and grams
- By-products and co-products where processes create them
- Expected yield and scrap
Track actual consumption so recipe costs reflect reality.
Quality and food safety
Use quality checks at receipt, such as temperature checks and certificates of analysis, and in production, such as metal detection and weight. Failed checks raise alerts. See our Odoo quality control guide.
Catch weight
Products sold by weight but counted by unit, such as meat and cheese, need careful setup. Standard Odoo handles units of measure, but true catch-weight processes usually need a module or customisation.
Allergens and specifications
Store allergen and nutritional data on products, and print it on labels and specifications. A small customisation is common here.
Sales and distribution
Food distributors often need customer-specific price lists, standing orders, route-based delivery and minimum shelf-life rules for retailers. Plan these during design.
Barcode and labels
GS1 barcodes carry product, lot and expiry. Use Odoo Barcode to scan them on receipt and picking.

Frequently asked questions
Can Odoo handle product recalls?
Yes. With lot tracking, Odoo's traceability report shows where a lot came from and every customer who received it, which is what a recall needs.
Does Odoo support FEFO picking?
Yes. With expiration dates enabled, removal strategies can pick the lots that expire first.
