Odoo for Construction Companies: What Works
How construction firms use Odoo: job costing with projects and analytic accounts, purchasing per site, subcontractors, progress billing, retention and equipment.
Construction companies need to know cost and margin per job, control purchasing across sites and bill clients as work progresses. Odoo can do this with good design.
Job costing
Make each job a project with its own analytic account. Then charge every cost to it:
- Materials from purchase orders
- Labour from timesheets
- Subcontractor bills
- Equipment use
- Expenses
Analytic reports show cost by job and by cost type. Compare with budget regularly.
Budgets
Set a budget per job, broken down by cost category. Odoo's budget reporting compares actual and committed costs with the budget. Review weekly on active jobs.
Purchasing per site
Create purchase orders against the job, with delivery to the site address. For stock held at sites, create a location per site. Small jobs often charge materials straight to the job without stock tracking.
Subcontractors
Subcontractors are vendors. Use purchase orders for agreed work, receive against progress and match bills to the order. This stops paying for work not done.
Progress billing
Construction contracts are billed in stages. Use:
- Milestone-based sales order lines
- Down payments and deductions
- Percentage-of-completion invoicing
Retention, where the client holds back a percentage until completion, usually needs configured accounts or a customisation. Plan it in design.
Equipment
Track owned equipment with Odoo Maintenance and charge equipment use to jobs. Rented equipment is a purchase cost.
Field teams
Site teams can log time, expenses and photos from the mobile app. Keep the screens simple.
Is Odoo right for you?

Frequently asked questions
Can Odoo do job costing for construction projects?
Yes. Each project has an analytic account, and purchases, timesheets, expenses and subcontractor bills can be charged to it for a full cost view.
Does Odoo support retention on invoices?
Retention is not standard in every version. It is usually handled with configured invoice lines and accounts, or a small customisation.
