Faster Month-End Close With Your ERP
How to close the month faster in an ERP: a close checklist, bank and sub-ledger reconciliations, accruals, inventory checks, consolidation and automation tips.
A slow close means management sees last month's numbers when they are already out of date. A good ERP setup can cut the close from weeks to days.
Do work during the month
The fastest closes happen because most work is done before month end:
- Reconcile bank weekly. See Odoo bank reconciliation.
- Post vendor bills as they arrive.
- Invoice customers on delivery, not at month end.
- Fix stock discrepancies when found.
A close checklist
Day 1–2
- Final bank reconciliation
- Review receipts not yet billed and deliveries not yet invoiced
- Post accruals for known costs without bills
- Post prepayment and deferral entries
Day 2–3
- Reconcile receivables and payables to the ledger
- Check inventory valuation against the stock report
- Post depreciation
- Revalue foreign currency balances; see Odoo multi-currency
Day 3–4
- Reconcile inter-company balances
- Review the trial balance for unusual balances
- Produce management reports
- Lock the period
Lock dates
After closing, set a lock date so nobody posts into the closed period by mistake. Odoo has lock dates for non-advisers and all users.
Inventory
Inventory is often the hardest part. With automated valuation, the stock report and the inventory account should agree. If they do not, find out why before closing. See inventory valuation: FIFO vs average cost.
Multi-company and consolidation
Groups must eliminate inter-company balances and consolidate. Plan account mapping in the ERP so consolidation is a report, not a spreadsheet. See Odoo multi-company setup.
Automate what repeats
- Recurring entries for rent and subscriptions
- Reconciliation models for bank lines
- Deferred revenue and expenses
- Depreciation from asset records

Frequently asked questions

Many well-run small and mid-sized companies close in three to five working days. With good ERP processes, some close faster.
What slows down month-end the most?
Late bank reconciliation, missing vendor bills, inventory discrepancies and manual journal entries built in spreadsheets.
