Odoo integrations that keep running when nobody is watching

Odoo exposes its data through XML-RPC and JSON-RPC APIs, and recent versions add a newer JSON-based API. Connecting to it is not difficult. Keeping a connection reliable for years — through API changes on both sides, rate limits, network failures and staff who change product codes without telling anyone — is the actual job.

Overview

The short version

We build Odoo integrations as small, monitored services with explicit data ownership rules, idempotent writes, retry queues and alerts. When something fails, the right person finds out quickly and can replay the failed message once the cause is fixed.

ERP Builders is an independent Odoo services company and is not affiliated with or endorsed by Odoo S.A. “Odoo” is a trademark of Odoo S.A.

01

Integration approaches

The right pattern depends on volume, latency and who owns the data.

Odoo-side connector module

Integration logic lives inside Odoo as a module using queued jobs. Good for moderate volumes and when Odoo is the hub.

External middleware

A separate service that brokers between Odoo and other systems. Better for high volume, many systems, or when Odoo should not carry the load.

Event-driven webhooks

Source systems push changes as they happen; Odoo processes them asynchronously. Lowest latency for orders and payments.

Scheduled batch sync

Periodic pulls for data that does not need to be real-time: price lists, product catalogues, nightly reconciliations.

02

Common Odoo integrations

eCommerce and marketplaces (Shopify, WooCommerce, Amazon) for orders, stock levels, products and fulfilment status. Payment providers (Stripe, PayPal) for payment matching and payouts. CRMs (Salesforce, HubSpot) where sales prefer their own tool and Odoo runs operations. Accounting platforms during transitional periods. Power BI for management reporting. And bespoke systems — production machines, legacy databases, logistics carriers, customer portals.

Off-the-shelf connectors exist for many of these. Some are good; some create duplicate partners and inconsistent taxes at scale. We evaluate the available connector first and build custom only when the connector cannot meet your data rules.

03

Reliability built in

Every message has a unique key so retries cannot create duplicates. Failures retry with exponential backoff and land in a visible queue after the final attempt. Credentials are stored outside the code and scoped to a dedicated integration user with only the access rights it needs. Each run writes a log entry you can search by order number or SKU.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Should we use an Odoo App Store connector or a custom integration?

Start by evaluating the existing connector against your rules for taxes, customer matching, product variants and fulfilment. If it fits, use it. If it needs heavy modification to fit, a purpose-built integration is usually cheaper to own.

Can Odoo handle real-time stock updates to Shopify or Amazon?

Yes, with sensible design. Rather than pushing on every stock move, we batch changes over short intervals and apply safety buffers, which keeps marketplaces accurate without hitting rate limits.

What happens when the other system is down?

Messages queue and retry automatically. If retries are exhausted, the message moves to a failed queue and an alert is sent. Nothing is silently dropped.
