Odoo in Canada: GST, HST, PST and Implementation
Odoo for Canadian businesses: GST, HST, PST and QST by province, cross-border trade with the US, bilingual documents, payroll options and migrating from QuickBooks or Sage.
Canadian tax is simple at the federal level and gets interesting at the provincial level. That's where most of the Odoo setup work for Canadian businesses goes, along with cross-border trade and language.
Taxes by province
The Canadian localisation sets up the tax types you need:
- GST in provinces without HST
- HST in participating provinces, at the province's rate
- PST in provinces that charge it separately, with their own exemptions
- QST in Quebec
Fiscal positions apply the right combination based on where the customer is (strictly, the place of supply). Set the province on every customer and delivery address. If it's missing, the tax will be wrong.
Some PST rules (for example, which products are exempt) don't fit neatly into standard tax setup. List your exemptions early and test each one.
Cross-border trade with the US
Many Canadian businesses sell into the US. That brings:
- USD price lists and bank accounts
- US sales tax obligations if you have nexus in US states
- Customs documents and HS codes on products
- CUSMA/USMCA origin considerations for some goods
Odoo handles multi-currency well. US sales tax may need a tax engine. See our Odoo USA guide.
English and French
Odoo supports both languages. For Quebec customers, set the partner language to French and their quotes, invoices and emails will follow. Translate product names and descriptions where they appear on customer documents.
Payroll
Canadian payroll (CPP, EI, provincial tax, ROEs) is usually handled by a dedicated service. Post a summary journal into Odoo each pay run.
Migrating from QuickBooks or Sage
Typical scope:
- Chart of accounts
- Customers and vendors with GST/HST numbers and provinces
- Products with costs and quantities
- Open invoices and bills
- Opening balances at a period end, ideally aligned with a GST/HST filing period
Finding a partner
Ask about multi-province tax setups, Quebec projects and cross-border experience. Make sure support hours cover your time zone. Canada spans more of them than people remember.
We work with Canadian businesses remotely. Start with the Odoo implementation guide, or talk to us about your setup.
