Best Open-Source ERP Systems Compared

Odoo Community, ERPNext, Dolibarr, iDempiere and Apache OFBiz compared on features, ecosystem, technology, ease of use and the kind of business each one suits best.

There are dozens of open-source ERPs. Only a handful are mature enough to run a real business on. Here's how the main ones compare, from people who've worked with them.

Odoo Community

Strengths: Huge ecosystem, strong inventory, manufacturing, eCommerce and website apps, and a clean framework for development. Thousands of partners and freelancers know it.

Weaknesses: Some important features (full accounting reports, barcode app, Studio, mobile apps) are Enterprise-only. Annual major versions mean regular upgrade work.

Choose it if you want breadth, a large talent pool and the option to move to Enterprise later. See Odoo Community vs Enterprise.

ERPNext

Strengths: Fully open source, including accounting, HR and payroll for several countries. Built on the Frappe framework, which is pleasant to customise.

Weaknesses: Smaller ecosystem and partner network. Some areas feel less polished than Odoo's equivalents, and the user interface takes some getting used to.

Choose it if you want everything open source, with no paid edition looming over the roadmap. We also compare it with Odoo in Odoo vs ERPNext.

Dolibarr

Strengths: Simple, light and easy to install. Good for freelancers, small shops, associations and very small companies.

Weaknesses: Limited depth in inventory and manufacturing. Less suited to growth.

Choose it if you need basic CRM, invoicing and stock for a very small team.

iDempiere

Strengths: Powerful, multi-organisation, multi-currency, with a long lineage (Compiere, ADempiere). Strong data model.

Weaknesses: Dated interface, steeper learning curve, smaller community. Needs Java expertise.

Choose it if you have a technical team and complex organisational structures.

Apache OFBiz

Strengths: A framework more than a product. Strong for building custom eCommerce and ERP applications.

Weaknesses: Not something you install and use. Expect significant development.

Choose it if you're building a custom system and want an open foundation.

How to choose

  1. List your must-haves. Accounting depth, manufacturing, eCommerce, payroll, localisation.
  2. Check the free edition covers them (or that community modules do).
  3. Look at the local talent pool. Who can support it in your country?
  4. Run a real transaction cycle in a test install.
  5. Model five-year cost, including upgrades. See hidden costs of free ERP.

For most growing SMBs, the real shortlist is Odoo Community and ERPNext. If you're stuck between them, an hour's consultation usually settles it.
