Odoo in the UAE: VAT, Corporate Tax and Setup
Implementing Odoo in the UAE: VAT returns, corporate tax readiness, free zone and mainland entities, multi-currency trading, Arabic documents and the coming e-invoicing rules.
The UAE has a lot of trading companies, re-exporters and multi-entity groups, which suits Odoo well. Multi-company, multi-currency and multi-warehouse are core strengths. The UAE-specific work is mainly VAT, corporate tax readiness, entity structure and bilingual documents.
VAT
Install the UAE localisation for a VAT-ready chart of accounts and the standard, zero-rated and exempt tax codes. Then work through these with your tax agent:
- Designated zones. Goods movements to and from designated free zones can have different VAT treatment.
- Reverse charge on imported services and certain goods.
- Emirate-level reporting. The VAT return splits sales by emirate, so record the right emirate on each sale.
- Tourist refund schemes for retailers, if relevant.
Corporate tax readiness
The UAE introduced federal corporate tax for financial years starting from June 2023. Your ERP doesn't calculate corporate tax by itself, but it needs to give your adviser clean data:
- Separate entities kept as separate companies in Odoo
- Related-party transactions clearly identifiable
- Non-deductible expenses on distinct accounts
- Analytic accounts for free-zone qualifying vs non-qualifying income, where that matters
Setting this up at implementation saves a lot of reclassification at year-end.
Free zone and mainland entities
Many groups run a free-zone company and a mainland company together. Odoo's multi-company features handle this well, with inter-company transactions between them. Decide early which products each entity sells, and how stock moves between them.
Multi-currency trading
Trading in AED, USD, EUR and other currencies is normal. Configure automatic exchange rate updates, decide how you'll handle realised and unrealised gains, and set price lists per currency where you need them.
Arabic and English documents
Invoices, delivery notes and quotations often need both languages. Odoo supports Arabic with right-to-left layouts. Customise the templates once, test print them, and you're done.
E-invoicing on the horizon
The UAE has announced a phased e-invoicing programme using accredited service providers. Timelines and technical details are still evolving, so don't plan around old blog posts. This one included. Check the current status when you scope your project, and make sure your partner has a plan for it.
Choosing a partner in the UAE
Ask about VAT returns they've prepared from Odoo, multi-company setups they've built, and how they'll support you through year-end for corporate tax. Check support hours overlap with the UAE working week.
We work with UAE trading, distribution and service companies remotely, with visits for discovery and go-live. Read the Odoo implementation guide, or book a consultation.
