ERP vs CRM: What Is the Difference?
ERP vs CRM explained simply: what each system does, where they overlap, when you need one or both, and whether to choose an all-in-one like Odoo or integrate.
ERP and CRM are often confused. Both are business software, both hold customer data, and many products do both. But they solve different problems.
What a CRM does
Customer relationship management (CRM) software helps you win and keep customers:
- Leads and opportunities
- Sales pipeline and forecasts
- Contacts, calls, emails and meetings
- Marketing campaigns
- Customer service
The CRM is about everything before and around the sale.
What an ERP does
Enterprise resource planning (ERP) runs the business that delivers the sale:
- Sales orders and invoicing
- Purchasing and inventory
- Manufacturing
- Accounting and finance
- HR and payroll
- Projects
The ERP is about everything after the sale and the operations behind it. See what is ERP for a fuller introduction.
Where they overlap
Both deal with customers, quotes and orders. The handoff is usually the confirmed quote: the CRM wins the deal, the ERP fulfils and bills it. Problems happen when the two systems disagree about prices, stock or customer details.
Do you need both?
| Situation | Recommendation |
|---|---|
| Small team, simple products | All-in-one ERP with CRM |
| Complex sales, simple operations | Strong CRM, light accounting |
| Complex operations | ERP, with built-in or integrated CRM |
| Established Salesforce or HubSpot | Keep it, integrate with ERP |
All-in-one vs integrated
All-in-one systems like Odoo put CRM and ERP in one database. Sales can see stock and invoices, finance can see the pipeline, and there is nothing to sync.
Integrated setups keep a specialist CRM and connect it to the ERP. This makes sense when the CRM is deeply embedded or the sales process is very complex. The integration then needs owning and monitoring. See our Salesforce and HubSpot integrations.
How to decide
List your top five problems. If most are about sales visibility, start with CRM. If they are about stock, delivery and month-end, you need ERP.

Frequently asked questions
Is CRM part of ERP?
Many ERP systems, including Odoo and ERPNext, include a CRM module. Large companies often use a separate CRM such as Salesforce and integrate it with the ERP.
Should a small business start with ERP or CRM?
If the main problem is finding and closing customers, start with CRM. If it is delivering, stocking and accounting, start with ERP. An all-in-one system can cover both.
