Odoo Community vs Enterprise: which edition do you need?

Free open-source core versus the licensed edition with full accounting, Studio and the industry apps.

Context

Before comparing feature lists

Odoo Community is open source under the LGPL licence and free to use. Odoo Enterprise is licensed per user and adds apps and features on top of the same core.

The choice is rarely about licence cost alone. It is about which apps you need, who will host and upgrade the system, and how much you want to rely on community-maintained modules.

Licensing, editions and features change frequently. Treat this as a structural comparison and confirm current pricing and capabilities with each vendor before deciding.

02

When Community is enough

Companies with simple accounting (or an external accounting system), a technically capable team or partner, and needs centred on CRM, sales, purchasing, inventory, manufacturing or a website often run well on Community. Community modules from the OCA fill many gaps.

The hidden cost is maintenance: every community module you add has to be checked and ported at each upgrade.

03

When Enterprise pays for itself

If you need full accounting with localisations, barcode scanning in the warehouse, Helpdesk, Planning, Quality, Studio or vendor-supported upgrades, Enterprise usually costs less than assembling and maintaining the equivalent yourself.

04

Switching later

Moving from Community to Enterprise is possible later and is a common path. We recommend doing it as its own step rather than during a version upgrade, so problems are easier to trace.

Decision guide

Which one fits your situation

Choose Odoo Community when…

  • You want no licence fees and can self-host
  • Accounting lives in another system or is simple
  • You have reliable technical support for upgrades
  • You do not need Studio, Helpdesk, Barcode or Planning

Choose Odoo Enterprise when…

  • You need full accounting and localisation
  • Warehouse teams will use barcode scanning
  • You want Odoo's upgrade service and support
  • You plan to use Helpdesk, Planning, Quality, Sign or Studio

Verdict

Our honest take

Community is a serious ERP for the right company, not a trial version. Enterprise is the safer default when accounting, warehouse scanning or vendor-supported upgrades matter.

Price both against your actual scope, including five years of maintenance, before deciding.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Can we start on Community and move to Enterprise later?

Yes. It is a common path. Plan it as a separate project step from any version upgrade.

Is Odoo Community really free?

The software is. Hosting, implementation, maintenance and upgrades are not.

Can Community do full accounting?

Not out of the box. Community modules add more accounting features, with varying quality per country.
