Odoo 20: What's New and What Actually Matters
Odoo 20 explained without the hype: AI agents, accounting and inventory changes, Field Service moving into Planning, and the changes that affect upgrades.
Every September, Odoo ships a new major version and the internet fills up with "50 amazing new features" lists. Odoo 20 is no different. The official release notes cover more than fifty apps, and a lot of it is small polish.
So instead of listing everything, here's what we think matters for a typical small or mid-sized business, and what you should check before upgrading. Everything below comes from Odoo's published release notes. Some features are Enterprise-only, so check your edition before planning around any of them.
The headline: AI agents that do work
The biggest theme in Odoo 20 is AI agents. They don't just answer questions. They can create and update records, send and upload files, and run from automated or scheduled actions. There's also an MCP connection, which lets outside AI tools work with your Odoo database within the user's access rights.
One thing to know straight away: all AI features now use paid IAP credits, billed on top of your subscription. That's worth budgeting for before people start experimenting. We cover agents properly in Odoo 20 AI agents.
Accounting: less typing, stricter rules
Notable changes:
- Bill line prediction pre-fills product, account, tax and analytic distribution from bill history
- Matching rules for reconciling bills and invoices automatically, with payment tolerance
- Duplicate detection with red and yellow warnings
- Parent accounts replace account groups, and account codes become optional
- Payment statuses renamed: "In Process" becomes "Paid", and "Paid" becomes "Reconciled"
That last one sounds trivial, but it will confuse anyone who's used Odoo for years. Details in Odoo 20 accounting changes.
Inventory and manufacturing
Inventory gets a stock aging report, inventory at a past date, suggested stock levels for reordering rules, CMR transport documents and a ShipStation connector. The old return wizard is gone in favour of simplified returns.
Manufacturing adds continuous production, a Kanban view for manufacturing orders, splitting MOs, and a single Produce button. Flexible consumption is now the default. See inventory changes and manufacturing changes.
Field Service is now part of Planning
The Field Service app has been discontinued and its features merged into Planning: worksheets, routing, live map, travel fees, customer equipment and more. If you use Field Service, this is the change that needs the most testing. See Field Service merged into Planning.
Sales, CRM, POS and eCommerce
Sales picks up commissions, quotation sections, line numbering and single-use discount codes. CRM switches lead data from Clearbit to Dun & Bradstreet and adds rotation modes for lead assignment. POS gets self-ordering, multiple currencies and employee access levels. Covered in sales and CRM and POS and eCommerce.
The changes that affect upgrades
These are less exciting and more important:
- Record rules are removed. Access rights now carry their own domain, in a new
ir.accessmodel. Every custom module with security files needs updating. See Odoo 20 access rights. - Tracking values are no longer stored. Chatter tracking messages are generated on the fly.
- Payroll work entries are removed, along with the Planning–Payroll integration.
- Font Awesome icons are replaced by Material Symbols, which matters for custom views and themes.
- The external RPC
dbservice is removed. XML-RPC and JSON-RPC are deprecated in favour of the JSON-2 API.
The full list, with what to check for each, is in the Odoo 20 upgrade checklist.
Our take
Odoo 20 is a solid release with a clear direction: more automation, more AI, and some long-overdue cleanup under the hood. For new projects, we'd start on 20. For existing databases, especially customised ones, treat it as a planned project, not a button click. Odoo supports each version for three years, so there's time to do it properly.

Frequently asked questions
When was Odoo 20 released?
Odoo 20 was announced at Odoo Experience in Brussels in late September 2026, with the official release notes published at the same time.
Should we upgrade to Odoo 20 straight away?
Not usually. New installs can start on 20. Existing customised databases should wait until the modules they rely on are ported and a test upgrade has been run.
How long is Odoo 20 supported?
Odoo supports each major version for three years, so there's no rush to jump on day one.
