Free Manufacturing ERP Software: Is Odoo Community Enough?

Small manufacturers often run production from spreadsheets and whiteboards long after they've outgrown them. Commercial manufacturing ERP looks expensive. A free one is worth a serious look.

What Odoo Community's manufacturing app does

Odoo Community includes the Manufacturing app (MRP) at no licence cost. It covers:

• Bills of materials, multi-level, with variants and by-products
• Manufacturing orders that reserve components and produce finished goods
• Work centres and operations with expected times
• Make-to-order and reorder rules that create manufacturing and purchase orders automatically
• Lots and serial numbers for traceability
• Unbuild orders and scrap
• Maintenance for machines, in a separate Community app

Because it's linked to Inventory, Purchase, Sales and Invoicing, a sales order can trigger production, which triggers buying, without anyone re-keying data.

What's Enterprise-only

Some features need Odoo Enterprise:

• Quality checks and control points
• PLM, for engineering changes and BOM versions
• Master production schedule (MPS)
• Shop Floor, the tablet app for operators

Is free enough for you?

Community usually works well when:

• You do discrete manufacturing with stable BOMs
• Planning is mostly make-to-order or simple reorder points
• Quality checks are handled outside the system, or are light

You'll probably want Enterprise, or custom work, when:

• You need formal quality control with recorded checks
• Engineering changes are frequent and need approval
• You plan production weeks ahead against a forecast

How to test it

Take three real products: a simple one, a typical one and your most awkward one. Build their BOMs, run a sales order through manufacturing to delivery, and check the cost. If that works, Community is probably enough. The Odoo manufacturing guide walks through the setup.
