Free Hospital Management Software: Open-Source Options That Work

Free and open-source hospital management software compared: what Odoo Community covers for hospitals, where clinical modules come in, and what a free setup really costs.

By ERP Builders Team2 min read

Hospitals search for free software for a simple reason: commercial hospital systems are expensive, and small hospitals and clinics can't always justify the cost. Open-source software is a real option. You just need to know which part of the hospital it covers.

Two different jobs

A hospital needs two kinds of system:

  • Clinical: patient registration, appointments, medical records, prescriptions, lab and radiology results
  • Business: pharmacy and consumable stock, purchasing, billing, suppliers, staff and equipment

General open-source ERPs like Odoo Community do the business side well. They don't do the clinical side out of the box.

What Odoo Community covers

Odoo Community is free and open source under the LGPLv3 licence. For a hospital, these apps are useful from day one:

  • Inventory for medicines and consumables, with lot numbers and expiry dates
  • Purchase for supplier orders and receipts
  • Invoicing for patient and insurer billing
  • Point of Sale for an over-the-counter pharmacy
  • Employees and Time Off for staff records
  • Maintenance for medical equipment and preventive schedules

Expiry tracking alone saves money. When the system tells you what expires next month, you use it first instead of writing it off.

Where clinical features come from

You have three options for patient records:

  1. A healthcare module on Odoo. The Odoo Community Association (OCA) has a medical repository, and third-party vendors sell hospital modules. Check that any module supports the Odoo version you're on and is actively maintained.
  2. A separate open-source clinical system. GNU Health is a well-known free hospital information system. It runs separately and can be connected to an ERP.
  3. Your existing hospital system, connected to Odoo. Keep the clinical system you have and send billing and stock data to Odoo through an API.

None of these is free to set up properly. Clinical workflows need careful configuration, and patient data needs to move in cleanly.

The real costs

The licence is free. These aren't:

  • Hosting. Patient data is sensitive, so choose hosting that meets your data protection rules.
  • Clinical module setup and any custom work.
  • Data migration from your current system.
  • Training for staff on every shift.
  • Support after go-live.

See the hidden costs of free ERP for a full checklist.

When free works, and when it doesn't

Free, open-source software tends to suit:

  • Clinics and small hospitals with simple workflows
  • Hospitals that want the business side sorted before replacing clinical systems
  • Organisations with in-house IT, or a partner they trust

It's harder for large hospitals with many departments, complex insurance billing and strict integration requirements. They usually need a dedicated clinical system with the ERP alongside it.

Free setup from ERP Builders

We set up Odoo Community for hospitals and clinics for free: pharmacy stock, purchasing, billing and staff. Hosting isn't included, and clinical modules are quoted separately. See free open-source hospital ERP for details, or our healthcare ERP page for a fuller project.

Frequently asked questions

Is there free hospital management software?

Yes. Open-source systems such as Odoo Community, plus healthcare modules built on it, have no licence fee. You still pay for hosting, and clinical features usually need extra setup.

Can Odoo run a hospital?

Odoo Community runs the business side well: pharmacy stock, purchasing, billing and staff. Patient records need an added healthcare module or a separate clinical system connected to Odoo.

Is free hospital software safe for patient data?

Safety depends on hosting, access control, backups and updates more than on the licence. Open-source software can be run securely, but someone has to own that work.
