Migrating from Tally to ERPNext: A Step-by-Step Guide
How to move from Tally to ERPNext: mapping ledgers, GST details, stock items and godowns, loading opening balances, picking a cutover date and reconciling.
Tally is the starting point for a large share of ERPNext projects in India. Businesses outgrow it when inventory, purchasing, manufacturing and multiple users need to work from one system rather than from Tally plus spreadsheets. Moving to ERPNext is very achievable, but the two systems model data differently, and a direct copy produces a messy result.
1. Choose the cutover date first
The cleanest cutover is at the start of a financial year, which gives you clean opening balances and avoids splitting GST periods across systems. The start of a month is the next best option. Mid-month cutovers add reconciliation work for little benefit.
2. Decide what to migrate
| Data | Migrate? |
|---|---|
| Customers and suppliers (Sundry Debtors and Creditors) | Yes, with GST details and addresses |
| Stock items and stock groups | Yes, cleaned and restructured |
| Godowns | Yes, as warehouses |
| Ledger balances | Yes, as opening balances |
| Outstanding bills | Yes, invoice by invoice |
| Closing stock | Yes, by warehouse and batch |
| Historical vouchers | Usually no — keep Tally read-only |
3. Map ledgers to a chart of accounts
Tally ledgers sit under groups; ERPNext accounts sit in a tree under assets, liabilities, income, expense and equity. Many Tally setups have hundreds of party ledgers that, in ERPNext, become customers and suppliers linked to a single receivable or payable account.
Use the migration to simplify. Merge duplicate expense ledgers, retire unused ones, and design accounts and cost centres for the reports you want, not the ones Tally produced.
4. Clean customer and supplier data
Export parties from Tally and fix:
- Duplicate parties with slightly different names
- Missing or invalid GSTINs
- Wrong states on addresses (which drive place of supply)
- GST category — registered, unregistered, composition, SEZ, overseas
This step directly affects whether invoices calculate the right tax after go-live.
5. Restructure stock items
Tally stock items often carry descriptions in the name, inconsistent units and no HSN codes. For ERPNext:
- Define an item code convention and item groups
- Set stock and purchase UOMs with conversion factors
- Add HSN codes and item tax templates
- Decide which items need batch or serial tracking
- Map godowns to a warehouse tree
6. Load opening balances
- Outstanding receivables and payables as individual opening invoices, so they can be paid and aged properly
- Closing stock by warehouse and batch through stock reconciliation, with valuation rates
- Remaining ledger balances through an opening journal entry
Then compare ERPNext's trial balance with Tally's for the cutover date. They should match to the rupee.
7. Rehearse
Run the whole import on a staging site at least twice. Reconcile the trial balance, stock quantity and value by warehouse, and receivables and payables by party. Fix the scripts, not the data in ERPNext, so the next run is clean.
8. Configure GST and test
Install India Compliance, set up company GSTINs, tax templates and accounts, and test typical transactions before go-live. See our ERPNext GST guide.
9. Train for the change in thinking
The biggest adjustment for Tally users is that in ERPNext, accounting entries are created by business documents. A delivery note moves stock, a sales invoice posts revenue and tax, a payment entry clears the receivable. Accountants used to entering vouchers directly need training on this flow, and on why they should rarely use journal entries for things a document should do.
10. Keep Tally available
Keep Tally read-only for historical lookups and audits. That is far cheaper than migrating years of vouchers into ERPNext.

Frequently asked questions
Can all my Tally history be imported into ERPNext?
It can, but it rarely pays off. We recommend migrating masters, open items and opening balances at a financial-year or month boundary, and keeping Tally available read-only for history.
How long does a Tally to ERPNext migration take?
The data migration itself is usually a few weeks within a wider implementation, depending on data quality, number of companies and stock complexity.
